Which financial calculator do you need?
Use the mortgage calculator when you are buying a home. It shows the full monthly cost of owning, not just the loan: property tax, home insurance, private mortgage insurance (PMI) when you put down less than 20%, and HOA fees.
Use the loan calculator for personal loans, student loans and most other fixed-rate loans. It is the quickest way to see how the term and interest rate change your payment, and how much extra payments save.
Use the auto loan calculator at the dealership. It handles the parts that make car loans confusing: trade-ins, money still owed on your old car, cash rebates, sales tax and fees.
Good to know
- Compare loans by APR and total interest, not just the monthly payment.
- A shorter term costs more each month but usually far less overall.
- Every calculator shows a full schedule, so you can see how each payment is split between principal and interest.
